The world’s toughest windsurfing contest returns – the 2021/22 Red Bull Storm Chase waiting period is now open!

Red Bull Storm Chase, the world’s most challenging windsurfing contest, happens only in minimum Force 10 winds (89-102kph) and huge waves. Starting now, the hunt is on for those unique conditions – with a focus on Northern Europe and an extended 6-month contest window.

Winter is on its way with stronger wind, waves and heavy weather. This means: Red Bull Storm Chase returns for another waiting period!

After a challenging past season without a suitable situation to hold the competition, the team is back at it: Chasing wind and waves, looking for the perfect storm for the world ́s best athletes to perform at their highest level – whether it ́s rocketing into the air, or carving up moving walls of water.

As always, the location is to be determined and all riders and crew will travel on short notice once a storm hits and the chase is on.
This season ́s competition window opens today, October 7th and closes on the 30th of March 2022. This extended contest window leaves quite some time to score the Force 10 winds (89-102kph) and matching needs for a worthy contest.

Location

In choosing the event site for Red Bull Storm Chase, consideration is given to locations that offer: a likely combination of Force 10 wind and waves; close proximity to an international airport, adequate medical coverage and emergency services, and an absolute guarantee of adequate water access. During the defined waiting period, this is most likely to happen in Northern Europe.

Event coverage and timing

A ‘watch’ alert will go out to riders and crew approximately 120 hours before the event, and confirmation will come just 72 hours before the event, at which point, media will be notified and riders and event crews will travel to the selected location.
